Monkey Business

Last Thursday, July 13, was the 81st anniversary of the Scopes Monkey Trial. It would be a truly amazing coincidence if Darby Conley didn't know the significance of the date when he happened to slip a reference to the trial in the current Get Fuzzy story arc.

See, it's neat when dailies make reference to things like that, but it's slightly more gratifying when they do so in a subtle way (there's nothing in the strip to suggest that it's the anniversary), and even moreso when they manage to make it part of an ongoing story, rather than the focus.

Strangely, I think this might actually be a conicidence, as Get Fuzzy is currently in reprint mode. Check the fine print - the copyright date on the strips for the past week or two has been 2004.

So if this strip ran on a Thursday in 2004 - which is likely, since reprints of strips with continuing plots like GF usually run on the same day of the week as the original run - then it couldn't have run on July 13th, 2004.

Although I guess it's possible that Conley made a point of having this particular arc be reprinted at this particular time so it would fall on the right day. But that's seems like way too much trouble.
